Slicing Tomatoes
- Arbrason (76 days) Hybrid; Rliable producer with very good flavor. Fruits average 7-9 ounces on vigorous plants. Excellent performer in poly high-tunnels. Indeterminate.
- Banana legs (75 days) Very prolific and long lasting. Bright yellow, pointed, banana shaped fruits, 4" long by 1½" in diameter, are meaty and low acid, making them especially good for slicing into salads. Determinate.
- Black Sea Man (75 days) A hardy Russian heirloom that tastes delicious. Rich, tangy flavor in medium-sized, 4-8 oz. fruits with brown-black skins and pink shoulders. Fruits are slightly plum-shaped. Short, potato leaf plants. Plant early for best results. Determinate
- Bloody Butcher (55 days) Sensational, multi-purpose, very early and high-yielding. Strong tomato flavor in medium, round, 4 oz fruits that are deep, dark red inside and out. Indeterminate
- Bonnie Best (72 days) An old fashioned red favorite producing 8 to 12 oz. globed fruits that are solid and meaty. Highly adaptable and performs especially well in the North. Indeterminate
- Buffalo (72 days), Hybrid. It is the greenhouse grower's tomato. It's globe-shaped very firm fruits ripen uniformly. Tomatoes average 8-9 ounces. Vigorous tall vines loaded with disease resistance. Indeterminate.
- Cosmonaut Volkov (65 days) A superb home garden variety with good commercial possibilities. Produces deep red, slightly flattened 8-12 oz globes by August. Juicy, sweet rich and full-bodied. Indeterminate.
- Costoluto Genovese (90 days) An excellent performer in both open air and greenhouses. Vigorous plants produce ribbed, firm, fleshy fruits weighing up to 7 oz with fine, sweet flavor. Good disease resistance. Indeterminate.
- Gulf State Market (70-80 days) A fine old market staple that has proven itself for generations. Plants produce smooth, blemish-free fruits averaging 6-8 oz each with firm, red flesh inside a pink-red skin.Indeterminate
- German Red Strawberry (80 days) This German heirloom is the quintessential sandwich tomato. Delicious, uniform fruits, resemble strawberries, but are much larger, averaging 10 oz and 3 ½" long. Solid meat has few seeds and little juice, yet delivers big on taste. Indeterminate.
- Green Zebra (72 days) Green-striped salad specialty. A delicious, tangy salad tomato, ripe just as the fruit develops a yellow blush, accentuating the darker green stripes. The 3-4" fruits are the ideal size for slicing into wedges. Indeterminate.
- Manyel (80 days) This full-flavored heirloom traces its ancestry back to the best tasting yellow tomatoes on the market. Prolific yields of smooth, golden, blemish-free fruits average 10 oz. Sparse foliage makes it moderately prone to early blight, cracking, and sunscald, but the results are well worth a little extra care. Indeterminate.
- Marmande (68 days) Old-time favorite, throughout much of Europe with vigorous vines that yield early, prolific crops of large, firm scarlet-red round, lobed fruits, with high-ribbed shoulders. Indeterminate.
- Mortgage Lifter (75-85 days) Also called Radiator Charlie. Long time favorite with good yields of very large, smooth, pink-skinned fruits even in droughts. Very meaty fruits with few seeds, much like Giant Belgium, but not quite as large. Very mild, delectable, sweet flavor. Indeterminate.
- Marglobe Select (72 days) This highly adaptable, tasty old favorite produces high yields of globe-shaped fruits on uniform vines. Large fruits are uniform as well, very sweet and thick-walled. Tolerant to Fusarium Wilt. This was my mom's favorite. Determinate
- Moonglow (80 days) Excellent for straight-from-the-vine eating. Medium-sized, bright orange fruits glow with neon intensity against 36" vines. A high yielder and good keeper, producing loads of tasty, 3-4 oz, globe-shaped fruits that are dense and meaty, with thick walls and few seeds. Flavor is sweet, with a hint of tartness, but without that strong acidic taste. Indeterminate
- Moskvich (60 days) One of the most appealing early tomatoes. Fruits are early, deep red and cold tolerant. Rich taste, smooth and globe shaped, 4-6 ounces with a small stem scar.
- Mule Team (78 days) Saved by generations of gardeners and reintroduced because of its enduring qualities: vigorous fruit set, round, medium-sized, red globes that weigh 8½ oz and are 2½ to 3" across, with a sweet, mild flavor. Meaty, textured fruits are produced continuously until frost on sturdy plants. Indeterminate.
- Nyagous (80 days) Ideal for fresh market and home gardens. Baseball-sized, 6 oz fruits are actually a dark, brownish-gray color when mature. Firm and blemish free. Excellent texture and a nice full flavor. Prolific plants bear up to 6 fruits per cluster. Indeterminate.
- Old German (75 days) An heirloom originally grown by the Mennonite community of Virginia, and one of the best-ever varieties for slicing. Huge fruits weigh 1½ to 2 lbs each, with an unusual boat shape. Indeterminate
- Ruby Gold (90 days) Boasts prolific beautiful huge red-streaked yellow fruits with marbled interior flesh, with superb mild sweet flavor. Indeterminate.
- Pruden's Purple (72 days) Early for its size and makes a great sandwich tomato. Produces 1 lb pink fruits with very few seeds, a silken texture and rich tomato taste, nicely tart. Indeterminate.
- Rutgers (75 days) Long considered an outstanding slicing, cooking, and canning tomato, the medium-sized 5-8 oz unblemished deep oblate fruits with rich red interior and pleasing texture have that great old time flavor. Indeterminate.
- Soldacki (75 days) Poland sends us this heirloom variety, memorable for low and acid and intense, sweet flavor. Dark pink fruits flattened in shape weighing about 1 pound and are packed with firm flesh inside the skin. Indeterminate
- Striped German (78 days) Bi-color red and yellow fruit. The flat, medium to large, variably ribbed shoulder tomatoes are shaded yellow and red. The marbled interior looks beautiful sliced. Complex, fruity flavor and meaty texture. Medium tall vines. Indeterminate.
- Sunray (72-83 days) Similar to Golden Jubilee in size, color and quality, but with strong resistance to Fusarium Wilt. Vigorous, sturdy vines, with heavy foliage yield plenty of richly flavored fruits that rival the flavor of the very best reds. Indeterminate.
- Thessaloniki (68 days) Uniform, baseball-sized fruits are the trademark of this variety developed in sunny Greece. Resistant to sunburn, cracks, and spots. Fruits have a pleasant, mild flavor, and virtually refuse to rot, even when completely red and ripe. Indeterminate.
Sauce/Paste Tomatoes
- Amish Paste (85 days) Ultimate sauce type, wonderful flavor and production, good in drought and wet weather. Oxheart fruits with thick bright-red flesh. Indeterminate.
- Bonny Best (75 days) Old-time canning variety, flesh solid and meaty, slightly acid, ripens easily. Medium-sized fruits great for eating whole right in the garden. Indeterminate.
- Golden Jubilee (72 days) Mild flavor and low acidity make this one of the best varieties for tomato juice. Bright, golden-orange fruits, 2½ to 3" in diameter, average 6-8 oz each and have meaty, thick walls. Fruits are solid with few seeds, making them ideal for home garden or fresh market. Indeterminate.
- Old Brooks (75-85 days) Smooth, blemish-free fruits known for their superior resistance to blossom end-rot as well as to early and late blights. Gourmet quality flesh, with a fine, even texture. The taste is somewhat acidic, which proves to be an asset in home canning. Good all-around variety. Indeterminate.
- Orange Banana (85 days) Amazing sprightly diverse tones, makes an ambrosial sauce by itself and adds a vivid fruity complexity to any sauce with other tomato varieties. Also good drying. Indeterminate.
- Sausage (75 days) An unusually-shaped tomato with fruits up to 6" long. A prolific paste tomato, with very fine-flavored meat that is especially ideal for ketchup or sauces.
- Bonny Best (75 days) Old-time canning variety, flesh solid and meaty, slightly acid, ripens easily. Medium-sized fruits great for eating whole right in the garden. Indeterminate.
Cherry Tomatoes
- Stupice (52 days) A native of Czechoslovakia, where its extreme earliness, tolerance to cold, superior flavor and high yields earned it worldwide attention. Tests show an astounding average of 87 fruits per plant. Fruits are sugary sweet, weighing 1 to 2 oz. Indeterminate.
- Sun Gold (57 days) The best cherry tomato ever developed, a perfect combination of deep sweetness with a bit of acid tartness. Small fruits, borne in prolific clusters, ripen very early to a rich apricot color. Indeterminate
- Rainbow Cherry Mix (63 days) All fruits are bite-size, 1½" across or less, and come in a full range of gold, oranges, creamy whites, yellows, pinks, greens, purples, and reds, even bi-colors!
