Fall CSA Newsletter: Week 1, November 7, 2008

Dear friends,

Welcome to the first week of the Fall CSA. For these first one or two weeks we will be operating mostly out of the barn and the field still. Things are looking marvelous in the hop houses, but just a tad small, so it is best to wait a little bit.

From the barn we will have garlic, onions, squash and potatoes. From the field we will have celery, cilantro, Brussels sprouts, kale, broccoli and collards for sure. I will see how other things look tomorrow morning and perhaps throw in some other good things to eat.

Teresa Wolcott had the brilliant idea to run the CSA on Thanksgiving week on Wednesday instead of Friday. Will you let me know if this is not a good idea? Otherwise we will make a switch to Wednesday just for that week, November 26 instead of the 28th.

I am attaching an interesting hand out I got from Jean's Greens - The Versatile Stinging Nettle. We have a pot of it to start the day around here. And here is a good read - In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. I am attaching the hopefully final list of CSA members for the fall.

Holden folks have published a pick up list and have asked me to hang it in the barn. If any of you have put together another pick up coop and want me to publish the names of members and the pick up days, please send it along.

Remember, we are running for 5 weeks and pick up is on Fridays (possibly on Wednesday, November 26 instead of the 28th) and you can come get your stuff by noon on pick up day. I will turn off the cooler on Friday night, but really don't care if you sift in all weekend to pick up if you can't make it on Friday.

Watch out for wandering birds when you come by to pick up. They really enjoy the humans, and if you make loud noises the turkeys make an amazing group gobble. Don't be put off by the geese. They are noisy but totally harmless.

I hope you are getting your windows washed and your houses are spanking clean. That seems to be where my head is at this time of year...
